To go LIVE on TikTok you generally need to be 18 or older and have around 1,000 followers, though TikTok says this follower threshold varies by market, and recognized creator networks can sometimes grant LIVE access to creators below it. That single sentence is the honest answer, and the rest of this post unpacks it so you know exactly where you stand. I'm LJ, founder of Peak Creators and a TikTok LIVE creator myself (@theylovlj). I grew my own room from 18 concurrent viewers to 2,000+, so I've lived the gap between "the rule" and "what actually happens in the app." Here is the full breakdown.

The age requirement: 18 and up

Start with the part that does not move. You must be 18 or older to broadcast LIVE on TikTok, and you must be 18+ to send or receive gifts during a LIVE. TikTok publishes this in its age requirements for TikTok LIVE.

If you've seen older "16+" claims floating around, ignore them. The current rule is 18+, full stop. The most reliable thing you can do here is make sure your account's date of birth is set correctly, because LIVE access and gifting both key off it.

The follower requirement: around 1,000, with a real asterisk

Here's where most articles oversimplify. The widely cited number is roughly 1,000 followers to access LIVE. But TikTok itself says this threshold varies by market, and that's not a loophole, it's the official position on the same support page above.

In practice that means three things:

  • Around 1,000 followers is a strong working target for most creators.
  • The exact number you need can differ depending on your region or market.
  • Recognized LIVE Creator Networks can sometimes grant LIVE access to creators below the usual threshold.

Independent coverage of this nuance, like this breakdown of how many followers you need for TikTok LIVE, lands in the same place: the 1,000 figure is a guideline, not a hard universal law.

How to check what applies to your account

Don't take a blog's word for your specific eligibility, including this one. The fastest, most accurate check is in your own app.

  1. Open the Create (+) flow in TikTok.
  2. Look for the LIVE option alongside Photo, Video, and so on.
  3. If LIVE appears and lets you set up a broadcast, you have access.

If LIVE isn't showing yet, it usually comes down to age, follower count, or market rules. That's the moment a network becomes genuinely useful, which I'll get to.

Gifting eligibility: a separate gate

Going LIVE and earning from LIVE are two separate gates, and people conflate them constantly.

To send or receive gifts, you again need to be 18+. Gifts convert into Diamonds, which TikTok describes as virtual items that recognize a creator's popularity. Diamonds aren't directly exchangeable for cash. Per TikTok's Virtual Items policy, cash-out runs through TikTok's Rewards and Cash Award program.

When you do cash out, it's PayPal-only with tiered low minimums and one withdrawal per day. If you want the full mechanics, we cover them in How TikTok LIVE Payouts Work.

What the money actually looks like

Quick reality check on earnings, because requirements only matter if there's something on the other side. Every figure below is an estimate, and no audited public dataset exists.

A Diamond is estimated at about $0.005 each, roughly 200 Diamonds to the dollar. The coins viewers buy to send gifts are estimated at around $0.0103 to $0.0133 each, varying by region. Independent analysis estimates TikTok's effective end-to-end cut at around 77% once app-store fees and coin markup are included, so creators net somewhere in the rough range of an estimated 25% to 50% of viewer spend depending how you measure it.

There's an upside lever too. TikTok's Scaled LIVE Rewards in 2025 to 2026 pay more as you complete missions, with per-LIVE missions estimated to add up to ~40% and weekly missions up to ~13%, for an estimated max around 53% (varies by region, confirm in-app).

As for take-home, one illustrative set of earnings tiers puts beginners around an estimated $50 to $300 a month, rising creators around $1,000 to $5,000, and top creators at $10,000 to $50,000+. Treat these as estimates, not promises. We dig deeper in How Much Do TikTok LIVE Streamers Make?.

Where a LIVE network fits in

Now the part that connects directly to your requirements question. TikTok runs an official LIVE Creator Networks program that provides coaching, strategy, and feedback, with networks paid by TikTok. Recognized networks operate verified Organization Accounts inside the LIVE Backstage portal.

Two things this means for eligibility:

  • A recognized network can sometimes help creators access LIVE below the usual follower threshold.
  • A network cannot override the 18+ age rule. Nobody can.

If you want the full picture of what these networks are and how they operate, start with our pillar guide, What Is a TikTok LIVE Agency?, and if you're comparing options, Best TikTok LIVE Creator Networks in 2026.

How to confirm a network is official

Trust matters, so confirm it with TikTok's own positive signals. A genuine network is free to join for creators, will often invite or onboard you through TikTok's own systems, and operates a verified Organization Account on LIVE Backstage. Reputable networks take 0% of your Diamonds, because TikTok compensates the network separately through its partner program. Those are the signals worth confirming.

How Peak Creators helps you get LIVE-ready

Peak Creators is an official TikTok LIVE agency operating on TikTok's LIVE Creator Networks program through the LIVE Backstage portal. We're 100% free for creators. We take 0% of your gift and Diamond earnings, because TikTok compensates us separately out of its own cut, never out of your share.

There's no follower minimum to join us. Creators at any stage are welcome. TikTok's LIVE-access rules still apply to actually going live, but joining costs nothing and the coaching starts immediately. What you get:

  • 1:1 and group coaching on going live, retention, and growth.
  • In-house tools: custom overlays, interactive scripts, and stream mechanics.
  • Creator asset packs: overlays, alerts, sounds, and scene templates.
  • A large, active community of TikTok LIVE creators for cross-promo, collabs, and accountability.

That last point matters more than people expect. TikTok's LIVE discovery rewards strong first-minute retention, sustained watch time, real-time engagement, and consistent schedules. Coaching and a community that shows up early are exactly how you hit those signals. If you want to go deeper on that, read How to Grow on TikTok LIVE.

The short version

To go LIVE: be 18+, aim for around 1,000 followers (knowing the exact number varies by market), and check the LIVE button in your own app for the truth about your account. To earn: you'll need to meet the same 18+ gate for gifting, and payouts run through PayPal.
