TikTok wants LIVE to feel safe for a teenager scrolling at home, a parent watching with their kid, and a brand deciding whether to advertise on the platform. Every rule traces back to one of those audiences. Content that is family-safe and advertiser-friendly gets the widest reach, because TikTok can confidently put it in front of anyone.

That alignment is good for you. The same content that keeps you compliant is also the content the algorithm wants to push. You are not choosing between "safe" and "successful." They point the same direction.

The basics: who can go LIVE

Before guidelines come the entry requirements. You generally need to be at least 18 years old to host a LIVE and to send or receive gifts. Most markets also ask for around 1,000 followers before you can go LIVE, though the exact threshold varies by market and account. What "advertiser-friendly" actually means

The simplest test: would you be comfortable showing this stream to a brand that is deciding whether to spend money on TikTok? If yes, you are almost certainly fine.

In practice, that means a few habits become second nature:

  • Keep your appearance and your setting appropriate for a general audience.
  • Steer your chat away from anything sexual, hateful, violent, or dangerous, and moderate promptly when viewers push it there.
  • Do not promote or display regulated goods like alcohol, tobacco, weapons, or gambling.
  • Keep claims honest. No fake giveaways, no misleading promises, no impersonation.

Keep the money on-platform

One rule worth its own section: do not push viewers to pay you outside TikTok. The gifting system is the approved way to earn on LIVE, and TikTok's Virtual Items policy explains that Coins and gifts live inside the platform. Viewers buy Coins (priced around an estimated $0.0103 to $0.0133 each, varying by region), send you gifts, and those convert to Diamonds on your side. Diamonds are then cashed out through TikTok's rewards program.

How payouts reward staying compliant

Earnings on LIVE run through Diamonds. Each Diamond is worth an estimated $0.005, roughly 200 Diamonds to the dollar. TikTok keeps a meaningful share end to end. One analysis estimates the platform's effective cut at around 77%, so creators net somewhere in the range of an estimated 25% to 50% of what a viewer originally spent. Those are estimates, and they shift by region and gift.

Here is the part people miss: every one of those Diamonds depends on your LIVE access staying active. A stream that follows the guidelines stays eligible, stays discoverable, and keeps earning.
